The New England Mobile Book Fair’s expected move strikes a chord

Posted 6 years ago in News

The New England Mobile Book Fair in Newton is the latest to feel the pinch of increasing costs of real estate in the Boston area and decreasing revenue at independent bookstores.

After the Globe story Thursday that explained that owner Tom Lyons was hunting for a smaller space before the lease at their Newton location is up at the end of the month, readers cried out. Some remembered the good times they had there, some lamented the economic situation for small bookstores, and at least one other offered to help the store move.

Here’s a sampling from the Globe comments section and social media:

“Thanks for the many happy hours shopping for books and gifts there! Will be shopping in the new location, for sure. Thanks for supporting many local writers throughout the years!” — curious10

“First, Amazon puts the brick and mortar retailers out of business. Then, Amazon decides to open brick and mortar retailer spaces of its own. It’s almost as if they planned it this way.” — Joeytwotoes

“I have been a voracious reader my whole life. I’m almost embarrassed to say how much I read - 4 to 5 books a week since I was 6. I’ve witnessed the demise of so many bookstore chains & independents even before Amazon. Each one is like a death. When Amazon opened their store in Legacy Place, I vowed never to enter. They destroyed bookstores and now they are opening them. Not for me.” — rossiegal

“Being in that huge, wonderful space was exciting. Books and more books. I loved every minute, wandering around and finding more than I intended to buy.” — route6a

“Say it ain’t so! What a gem. So many hours with my young children foraging for wonders!” — gramom123

“Visiting the New England Mobile Book Fair was heaven to this avid reader. Picture a kid in a candy store, a pig in mud, a a cat in catnip. No better place to lose oneself--and no harder place for my husband to drag me away from. Please make sure we know where you are Mr. Lyons. All the best to you.” — ks

“I’m saddened by this news more than I can say. This store has been a second home to me for 35 years. As one commentator expressed it, had I known this, I wouldn’t have embraced online shopping so fervently.” — MichaelWillhoite

Boston City Councilor Matt O’Malley made a pitch that the store should move to his district, and he’ll help with the move.

On the Facebook page of the bookstore, others also chimed in to suggest their neighborhood as a possible location.
